Patient who received first fully robotic heart transplant now hiking months after surgery at Baylor St. Luke’s
Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center conducted the first fully robotic heart transplant on Tony Ibarra after heart failure in November 2024. A few months later, he was seen hiking in a national park with a heavy backpack, a striking sign of recovery. Dr. Kenneth Liao notes ongoing refinements to make the procedure more efficient. The robotic approach uses small chest incisions instead of opening the sternum, reducing pneumonia, pain, and delayed activity. At his 100-day checkup, biopsies were normal and heart function was strong. AI may further advance robotic surgery.
